RichardSolo promo gets you 1800 mAh iPhone backup batteries on the cheap

Richard Thalheimer's company RichardSolo was one of the pioneers of the iPhone backup battery business. Way back in 2008, the company came out with the RS001 1800 mAh backup battery, at a price of US$69.95. Well, if you live in the USA and use a special promo code while ordering, you can now get this battery pack for as little as $5.09.

These are very useful backup batteries for the iPhone. They come with a built-in laser pointer, an LED flashlight, a dual voltage 110-240V AC wall charger, a USB/mini-USB retractable charge cable, a dual port USB car charger, and small support braces for most generations of the iPhone that can be used to hold the battery pack to the phone. The battery packs also work with all iPod models that use the Dock connector.

If you buy one, the price is $5.98, but for two or more the price drops to $5.09. Once again, the deal is only valid for US customers, and it ends at midnight on July 31st, 2011 or when supplies are exhausted. To get the deal, enter the code word fireworks into the coupon code box while checking out. For more details and to order your backup batteries, visit the product page for the RS001.

iOS Hacker Begins Porting Swype To Jailbroken iPhones

When it comes to Swype and their crazy drag-to-type alternative keyboard of the same name, there's only one problem: it's really, really tough to give up once you've gotten used to it. Alas, I've gotta deal with the withdrawal symptoms each and every time I jump from an Android device back to my iPhone, due to restrictions inherent to iOS. While Swype was purportedly working on something for iOS in June of last year (and, as the rumor mill had it, trying to convince Apple to make it official) all word of it went silent pretty quickly. The mission has been revived, it seems, albeit with someone else behind the charge: Andrew Liu, developer of the "DreamBoard" theming hack for jailbroken devices, has begun to "port" Swype to iOS.

The Engadget Podcast, live at 5:00PM ET!

Engadget founder Peter Rojas had such a blast on the last episode of The Engadget Show that he's taken up Tim and Brian's offer to lend his voice to this week's podcast. We'll be talking more about the unfulfilled promise of the HP TouchPad and maybe setting up a Facebook / Skype meetup, since the Google+ thing went so well. Actually, probably not on that second thing...

Update: It's over! But, we'll have the full recording up tomorrow!

Study reveals Apple surpasses RIM in US smartphone share

Apple is now the #2 mobile platform in the US with 26.6% market share. Apple rose 1.4 percentage points and inched past RIM which now holds 24.7% of the US market. Similar to Apple, Android also gained market share grabbing another 5.1 percentage points to climb to 38.1% market share. Rim took the biggest plunge with a loss of 4.2 percentage points. These metrics are from Comscore's latest report which monitored smarpthone usage for the three-month period ending in May 2011.

On a manufacturer basis, Apple showed the greatest gain, jumping from 7.5% to 8.7% market share. Though it's far from being the leader (Samsung is #1 with 24.8%), Apple continues to move upward while rivals like Samsung, Motorola and RIM remained steady or slid slightly.

If this trend continues, the US smartphone market could become a two-horse race with Android and iOS vying for the lead. A third platform could grab the bulk of the leftovers. Right now RIM is sitting pretty in third, but if it continues its downward slide, it might lose its spot to the onslaught of Windows Phone handsets expected from the Microsoft-Nokia partnership.

Amazon Cloud Player hits iPad, adds unlimited storage, scoffs at constrained competition

Amazon Cloud Drive and Cloud Player hits iPad, goes unlimited, scoffs the constrained competition
20,000 songs? Not nearly enough. $24.99 a year? Way too spendy. Unlimited and $20 a year? That's a little better, at least, and that's what Amazon just moved to. Taking a step up from its previous $20 for 20GB plan, the former bookseller is now letting new subscribers get any amount of storage they want for that price -- unlimited for .mp3 and .m4a files, anyway. Naturally this means any songs purchased through Amazon MP3 will also be stored for to an infinite extent, not counting against your all-important quota. This is a "limited time" kind of deal, so if you've been on the fence now's the time to click that cart, but there's another new feature that isn't going away: Cloud Player for Web on iPad. This lets you play your cloud tunes through Safari and that, combined with the whole unlimited storage thing, should ease any nagging feelings of regret you've been suffering since budgetary pressures talked you into the 16GB model.

I?m Quitting Email

It started as an idea. Well, a Tweet, really. What if I just stopped responding to email? Sure, at first it was said in half-jest after a few drinks. It was me channeling my inner Peter Gibbons ? "I'm just gonna stop going" ? while I'm sitting here in Washington D.C. completely buried in email after not getting to it all day. But the motivation behind the Tweet and the idea is very real. Email is the absolute devil. And the only way to not be corrupted is to... run away. So that's exactly what I'm going to do. For the rest of this month, I'm not going to respond to any emails. None.
